  Land-based Skills

A new direction for young people within Cornwall and Devon.

The Learning Skills Council funded course is designed for 14 - 18 year olds who have left education and not yet found employment. The aim of the course is to ease young people back into education, employment or training.

The Duchy College affiliated centres will use their unique facilities at Saltash and Callington to teach skills that will help young people turn their lives around.

On this 18 week course they will undertake a series of challenges designed to build confidence and communications skills facilitating their place in society.

The emphasis is education that is both fun and practical. The aim is to develop both social and practical skills which will help young people on their future career path. The course has been designed to give young people a taste of the wide variety of jobs and opportunities available to them within the countryside sector.

The programme can also act as a stepping stone to nationally recognised qualifications such as Modern Apprenticeships, First Diplomas, and First Aid at Work.

While much of the course will involve participation in outdoor activities students will also receive instruction in life skills such as personal finance, literacy, numeracy, health and safety and organisational skills.
