  Work Experience Landbased Skills (WELS)

A new approach for young people to find employment within Cornwall and Devon.

The Learning Skills Council funded course is designed for 16 - 19 year olds who have left education and not yet found employment. The aim of the course is to help young people into a supported work placement with the aim of securing either a full time apprenticeship or employment.

The Duchy College affiliated centres will use their unique facilities at Callington and Saltash to teach skills that will help young people turn their lives around.

On this 23 week course trainees will undertake a series of modules designed to build confidence communications skills and work readiness facilitating their place in the work sector.

The aim of the course is to gain a full time apprenticeship or employment placement. The emphasis is to equip young people with the necessary practical and social skills to embark upon a career path of their choice.

The course has been designed to give young people the necessary knowledge to enter the workplace. This includes increasing relevant practical skills to industrial level, investigating Health & safety requirements, understanding finance (payslips, income tax, NI) researching employment opportunities and identifying the training and educational requirements they will need when working within the countryside sector.

The programme acts as a stepping stone to either employment or a Modern Apprenticeships.

While much of the course revolves around the supported work placement students will receive related practical instruction. They will also be taught workplace skills such as personal finance, literacy, numeracy, health and safety and organisational skills.
