Coronavirus Update March 11th 2020

The following letter has been sent to all students today:

March 11th 2020

Dear Parent / Carer / Student

We are writing to you because we take the health and wellbeing of our students, staff and their families very seriously. As you may be aware, there have been a small number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in Cornwall, but we are not aware of any confirmed cases in our local community. However, one member of staff at TST has self-isolated and been tested for coronavirus, and their results are due back on Thursday 12th March.

We are taking advice daily from the NHS, the Department for Education, and our contract holder V Learning Net. So far, the advice has been to keep the college open and continue as normal, while taking precautions with personal hygiene.

However, if you are a student who has an underlying health condition and are therefore more vulnerable to infection or live with some with an underlying health condition, we are advising you not to come into college at this time. This will be recorded as an authorised absence and will not affect your attendance.

If you have a cold, sore throat, a fever or feel unwell please do not come into college and take advice from the NHS helpline 111.

To reduce the risk of catching coronavirus, or any other virus, please use the following guidelines:

  • Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Avoid close contact with other people
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then put the tissue in the bin and wash your hands
  • Do not attend college if you have cold or flu-like symptoms (e.g. high temperature, cough, shortness of breath).

Any changes in our approach will be posted on our website and social media. Should we be advised to close the college we will endeavour to phone everyone individually, so please listen to your voicemails and keep an eye on our social media.

Yours faithfully

Katie Connell

Head of Education

Coronavirus Advice

Coronavirus – Advice for all staff and students

The overall risk of Coronavirus to the UK remains moderate. However, we understand that people may be concerned where there are students or staff returning from or visiting China or other countries, or where they may have been in contact with individuals who have been travelling.

Public Health England and the Foreign Office have issued advice for anyone travelling to the area. This can be found at:

Latest information and advice can also be found at:

 Advice for parents/guardians/carers

You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your children catching the Coronavirus.

There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend TST as normal.

We recognise that some families or children may be planning to travel in the near future. If so, please refer to the FCO’s latest travel advice via the link above.

What action you can take

A UK wide campaign has been launched to provide clear advice on how to slow the spread of Coronavirus.Wash your hands thoroughly and frequentlySneeze or cough into a tissue or flexed elbowMaintain social distance from other people (about 1 metre)Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouthIf you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing seek medical careAvoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products

SITE CLOSED TODAY

We're really sorry for the late notice, but due to the bad weather we have to close the site today, Monday 19th March 2018. All learners will be able to make up their hours next term, so please don't worry about missing college. Stay safe and enjoy the snow! We will keep you updated but expect to be open again tomorrow.

SITE OPEN

We will be open as normal tomorrow, Tuesday 19th March 2018, with all minibus pick-ups working at your usual times. It's still very chilly so wrap up warm with plenty of layers.

Callington Mayfest 2018

On May 19th 2018 TST will be attending Callington Mayfest. We will be providing a team of volunteers to help with traffic management for the parade and will be entering our very own giant, built by TST students. Here is a photo of our giant from 2017.

It’s a great community day, full of dancing, singing, craft and fun. If you want to know more go to the Mayfest website https://callingtonmayfest.weeb

SITE CLOSED TODAY

We don't have any snow yet, but with temperatures at -4 degrees we've decided it's too cold for students to be working. Please stay at home and keep looking on here and facebook for updates

BAD WEATHER CLOSURE

Due to weather warnings issued by the Met Office, we have decided to close the site to students on Wednesday 28th February and Thursday 1st March. We expect to be back to normal timetabling on Monday 5th March, but will update as things progress.

We will make up the missed days later in the academic year, so this will not affect student's learning.

Graduation 2018

We will be holding our end of year celebration in July. Watch this space and our social media for more details

Matrix Accreditation review

On October 18th we had our Matrix Accreditation review, which we are pleased to say we passed with flying colours. The full report is available as a PDF download, but here are a few comments from the assessor:

Performance data for 2016-17 demonstrates actual achievement as overall retention at 94.8% and overall achievement as 92.5% with 100% achievement for functional skills. The performance is excellent for any provider but particularly so in the context of the young people that TST supports.

There is no doubt that the student is at the heart of everything TST does

Students said the difference at TST is that staff care and understand them as individuals

Staff Achievement

Congratulations to our youngest member of staff, Leah Coulton, who has passed her BA(Hons) in Youth and Community Work with 2nd class honours. Leah came to work with us at TST nearly 2 years ago to gain some work experience, and has never left! She has been working and studying throughout that time so we are very proud of her achievement, and wish her every success in the future.
